CULTURAL NOTE
Onè / Respè Exchange
A classic Haytian exchange: one says “Onè” (honor, dignity), the other replies “Respè” (acknowledging the honor). Used with elders, authorities, and in diaspora communities — a mark of respect rooted in Hayti heritage.
DIASPORA TRIVIA
Haytian Diaspora: an identity across the world
More than 3 million Haytians live in the diaspora — USA, Canada, France, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Chile and elsewhere. The “Onè/Respè” exchange remains a cultural identity marker that connects them, wherever they are.
